Which "Friend" are you?

I'm sure you all know the famous TV series called "Friends". It lasted for 10 years and won many awards such as Emmy and Golden Globe. Personally, I am still addicted, so I am dedicating this article to those 6 good friends who made me laugh every time I watched. They are good friends, but very different from eachother. Which one are you? And more importantly, WHY? Well, read and decide...

MONICA: She is Ross's younger sister. She is a cook at a restaurant because she loves cooking and she is very good at it. She is also very disciplined and tidy. She hates messy places. She actually loves cleaning! When people spill something on the floor or on the couch, she gets very angry. Later in the show, she starts dating Chandler and later, they get married. She has a big heart and loves helping people. She always gives her things to her friends but never gets them back. She has got blue eyes and wonderful shiny dark brown hair. She is the "mother" of the group. All she wants is to get married and have children. At the end of the show, she adopts twins.

ROSS: Ross is Monica's older brother. He is a total geek! He got married three times(all of them ending in divorce). He is a professor and he teaches antropology. He is very emotional and loving. He has a son, BEN from his first marriage and he is a wonderful father. He is very easy going, warm and understanding. He is in love with Rachel and towards the end of the show, they have baby together. He falls in love very quickly. He is interested in ancient history and dinosaurs. He is very attached to his family, especially to his mother. At the end of the show, Rachel and Ross end up together.

PHOEBE: Phoebe is into very strange things. She is a tough girl and she kicks butt!! Noone messes with her. She knows the streets very well and always attracts strange men. She says she can talk to her dead grandmother. She can read people's fortunes as well. She likes wearing several rings on her fingers. She is very straight and blunt. She tells things directly at people's faces. She is not scared of anything. She falls in love with a weird scientist first but then she meets the love of her life and gets married to him. Cool chick...

CHANDLER: He is the negative one. He likes making fun of people. He doesn't like celebrations or special days such as Thanksgiving. He doesn't trust people quickly. He has a good job but doesn't like working hard. He is a bit lazy. He can't do any housework. Later in the show he marries Monica although they are very different. He makes many mistakes but eventually apologises. He loves football and drinking beer in front of the tv. He looks very tough but deep inside he is a loving person. He is actually very clever.

RACHEL: She is the spoiled one. She loves shopping and spending money. She comes from a rich family. She loves gossipping as well. She is a girly girl... She dated Ross for 2 years, but then they broke up. She is usually attracted to handsome men and she is very flirty. She is also very childish. She always takes Monica's things and loses them. She has got 2 sisters but she doesn't get along well with them. She is very self confident. She doesn't like reading. The only things she reads are fashion and gossip magazines. She is Monica's roommate. However, when Monica and Chandler start living together, she moves in with Joey. At the end of the show, she has a baby girl called Emma.

JOEY: He is the ladies' man! He flirts with every woman on the planet. He can eat a whole turkey at once. He is very protective and he can not lie to his friends. He is not very clever but he has a heart of gold. He gets angry very easily but then forgets about it. He loves watching "Baywatch" where all the girls are in their swimming suits. He eats a lot but he always eats junk food. He sometimes takes some food from Monica's fridge without asking. He is a very good friend but a lousy boyfriend... I think he is the funniest in the bunch.

SO WHICH ONE IS IT FOR YOU?

Who was who in Greek Mythology?

Well, nice topic... I just finished watching "The Clash of the Titans", and decided to do some research about the Gods in Greek Mythology. As I dug deeper, this little search of mine got more and more interesting... I'm proud to introduce the weird bunch...

ZEUS: The God of all the Greek Gods... He was the youngest son of Chronus and Rhea. He married his sister, Hera! (oh God!). However, he wasn't faithful to Hera and he had affairs with other Goddesses and mortal women. He was the father of Ares, Artemis and Apollo...to name a few... When he wanted to punish people, he sent thunders and lightning. Hercules and Perseus were his sons from mortal women. Cool dude, eh? He used a thunderbolt as his weapon-and symbol.

HERA: She was the Goddess of women and marriage. Although she was Zeus's sister, she married him! All her life, she chased after Zeus's mistresses and illegitimate children. She was a jealous and quick-tempered Goddess(goddess of women...what can you expect?!) She was especially jealous of Aphrodite(duh!). She gave birth to a very ugly child called Hephaestus, he was so ugly that Hera, her mother sent him away from Mount Olympos. Later, this ugly guy came back for revenge, but then changed his mind when Hera offered him Aphrodite.(poor girl...)

POSEIDON: The God of the water, horses and earthquakes. He was Zeus's brother. He was married to Amphitrite(I have noo idea who she was). Together, they had a child called Ployphemos. Polyphemos was half man-half fish. Poseidon was always jealous of his brother Zeus. Like Zeus, Poseidon also had a lot of affairs with other women, Goddesses and creatures.

HADES: It means "invisible" in Greek. He was the God of the underworld, death and fear. (hmm.... spooky... ) He was the third brother of Zeus, but he was not very popular. He never left the underworld and he didn't join any of the celebrations among the other Gods. He was married to Persephone. In fact, Hades ruled his own empire in the underworld...where "sleep" and its brother "death" also resided. They say, Hades sent people dreams and he had all the treasure of the underworld. Some people also called him Pluton. (and he is the only one who is faithful to his wife?! Ironic..)

ATHENA: She was the Goddess of peace, phylosophy and art. Her father was Zeus and her mother was Metis. She never got married. In addition, she helped soldiers in wars and brought justice to caos. She was a nice catch... Good for her... A legend tells that Zeus swallowed Metis(his first wife) because he was afraid that she would destroy her. However, when Zeus swallowed Metis, she was already pregnant with Zeus's baby, Athena! Metis gave birth to Athena inside Zeus(eeewwwww!). She taught Athena how to fight and to be strong. Later, after Athena grew up, she came out of Zeus's head and demanded respect! Oh my my my..... Talking about a family drama....

APOLLO: He was the God of medicine, music, poetry and health. His father was Zeus and his mother was Leto. He had a twin sister, Artemis. Apollo fell in love with a mortal girl called Daphne. However, Daphne didn't want Apollo because she wanted to die as a virgin, so she asked Artemis to hide her somewhere. Artemis turned her into a tree. They say that's where the daphne tree comes from... hmmm interesting....

APHRODITE: Aaaahhh... She was the Goddess of love and beauty. Romans called her Venus. Oh dear!! She didn't have any parents, she was made of Uranus's genital organ! Oh nooo.... that is NOT how I imagined her birth! After Cronus threw Uranus's genital organ into the sea, drops of blood became alive and turned into this Goddess! She was married but frequently unfaithful to her husband. She was very much attracted to Ares(God of war) because of his violent nature. Her beauty did not do well for her. She was miserable and depressed in some cases, and this made her lose some of her beauty. She had a lot of children, but never lost her figure...(tummy-tuck??)

ARES: He was the God of blood, war and violence and the son of Zeus and Hera. Romans called him Mars. His children were "terror" and "fear" who were from Aphrodite. (who would name their children Terror and Fear?!) He was a heart breaker, for sure.

HERMES: Aside from the infamously expensive bags, he was the messenger of Gods. He also guided people to the underworld.  He was an orphan(we actually don't know who his parents were). On the first day he was born, he invented lyre!! (the musical instrument). He stole Apollo's cattle. Of course, Apollo got very angry and wanted his cattle back. Hermes started playing the lyre. Apollo liked it very much and gave his cattle to Hermes and took the lyre from him. (that's what I call good shopping). He could fly to places.

This is it for now... here are some pictures. can you match the information to the Gods? Give it a try;)

Whatever happened to Cinderella?

We haven't heard from her since her wedding. What do you think happened to her? Did she really live happily ever after? I don't think so... Any ideas?? Let's hear from you!

PS: I think she and the prince got a divorce... He was too stingy to hire help, so he made her clean the whole palace once a week. He was too good to be true anyway.

Ponchique (cool, eh??)

I've just taken this picture because I had nothing better to do AND I wanted you to meet my naughty, lovely, clever and loyal kitty. His name is Ponçik! First I named him "Mojo"- it means "ilham" in Turkish- but then I realised he is not mojing me afterall. (mojing is not a real word by the way, my dear students. Do NOT try to use it in a sentence). Who says "mojo" more than 3 times in a life time anyway... Therefore, I ended up with Ponçik. Another prep teacher Tuğba Öztürk gave him to me because he was homeless and all alone. He is the best thing that happened to me in months. Living alone has a lot of advantages but sometimes I want someone to feel happy that I come home. That someone is Ponçik now. When I read your papers very early in the morning (yes, my mind works better in the mornings), he wants to sit on your papers and play with my pen. He is a lovely thing. Thank you Tuğba. Also, thank you Sevim hanım, she was the one who told me about him. Even if you don't have a pet, please remember to feed the ones on the streets. Winter is coming, you know...

Dear Gemini....

My students know that I am a proud Gemini... talkative, independant, funny, moody, undecisive, practical and cynical... My mother was interested in astrology when I was a little girl, so most of the things I read were about astrology. She loved reading, my mom. However, I only chose the books which were about astrology. They were fun, interesting and much less detailed than those Orhan Pamuk books. I grew up reading that a gemini woman was talkative, stubborn, intelligent, materialistic, kind of shallow in some cases, not very maternal, social, a great scheduler, sarcastic, judgemental, not a fan of loneliness and many other things... Now I am 33, have been doing a bit of soul searching within myself (plus, I HAVE the time since everyone's gone for the bayram!), am I really a total of those things? Or have I been programmed to be those things by reading what a Gemini woman is supposed to be? After 30, I feel a new sense of power inside me. A power to stand up and say NO to many things I used to accept before. I chose my job more consciously, I chose my friends more carefully and started to enjoy and appreciate my "alone" time. Am I changing into another sign?? Or am I becoming who I was supposed to be all along? Do I like the new me? Would I be close friends with the new me?

They say 33 is the hardest age. I thought I would never change. Slowly transforming into another persona makes me feel strange, very self-conscious I must admit. Maybe I should let go and see what happens...

HOLIDAAAAYY! - Those were the days....and she's still cool!!

Madonna- Holiday (Dance Show)
Yükleyen effegi. - Yüksek çözünürlüklü video keyfini yaÅayın!

I can't remember how many times I got dressed like Madonna and danced in front of the mirror, just like her!! This is the song that was mentioned in Cutting Egde...remember? This was her first hit.

What can I do sometimes?

LUV LUV LUVIN IT!

Well, I knew there was a reason why I couldn't go on a holiday and stayed in this God forsaken city!! I can't wait for all of you to come back so I can tell you what this is all about! I am perked up and excited! Making a blog is so much fun, and I'm sure it will feel much much better when you participate. It feels kind of lonely at the moment....

Lesson of the day: There is a good reason for everything...

WHICH ONE ARE YOU?!

Holidaaaay! Celebrate!

Most of you guys were not born when I started singing this song... oh dear...

Anyway, I am home. I've been home for 3 days now. I just went to the supermarket next to my place to get some stuff to feed myself with. That's all. I fed my cat, texted my friends, they texted me back, read In Style, Vogue and Harper's Bazaar from cover to cover. In the mean time I watched quite a lot of DVDs. My favorite was an Oscar winning film called "Precious".  It's a sad sad story of an obese black girl in the 1980s. Her story was so sad and moving, I cried at the end of the film. This film made me realise how LUCKY we all are. We are lucky because we are healthy. We are lucky because we are free. We are lucky because we are educated. Everyday you come to school and I know you are not happy about it, but this girl doesn't even know how to read and write at the age of 16! She has got a horrible family... We are really lucky.

The second film I liked was "Chatroom". It was a thriller. In this film, there are 5 teenagers. They form a chatroom online but they don't really know eachother. At first, everything is fine, they chat for hours, they share secrets, talk about their problems. However, one of them has got evil plans for the other 4...
I know you are all too smart not to chat with people you don't know. Be careful out there.

SOOOO...... the lesson(s) of the day:

1- be thankful for what you have.
2- don't talk to strangers!

I hope you are having a wonderful holiday!
